Issue: Committees
IWUF Committees are important in the development of Wushu. While the IWUF Constitution describes the functions of each Committee, my concerns are around the strategic direction and management capability of each Committee, and the role and responsibility of the Chair in achieving its goals.
In this regard, I believe that each IWUF Committee should have an Annual Plan with agreed goals and actions signed off by the IWUF EB, and be required to report on progress against the actions on a half-yearly basis. This clearly is not the case.
I also believe that the Chair of each Committee should be vetted for the role against a clear set of criteria, to ensure that only suitably qualified and experienced candidates are recommended for election into the roles.
A case in example that I believe needs addressing, is that of the Marketing and Development Committee, which according to the IWUF constitution, is responsible to "draft and implement the IWUF marketing and development plan."
The 'marketing' part of the Plan is crucial to the future growth of Wushu and should be effective in positioning Wushu in the minds of all IOC voting members and public as a dynamic global sport that belongs in the Olympics.
If IWUF is committed to the contribution that each Committee needs to make to the development of Wushu, then part of the IWUF annual budget should be aligned to ensure each committee is adequately resourced to achieve its goals and actions.
In regards to the Marketing and Development Committee, I have nominated Mr Walt Missingham (President of Kung Fu Wushu Australia) for the position of Chair of the Committee. Ironically Mr Missingham is the only person on the Committee with any professional experience in marketing! I urge you to vote for Mr Missingham as the new Chair of the Marketing and Development Committee at the upcoming elections.
We believe that the IWUF President should demonstrate a hands-on leadership style over each committee to ensure they are meeting the needs of Wushu and the IWUF Members who elect them into office.
